I got back from vacation in Michigan last Tuesday evening, immediately changed and headed over to the Park West for TIGI's Get Closer Tour with Anthony Mascolo. I was exhausted but it was well worth it for the chance to see some great work and get inspired.
Sponsored by Behind the Chair, this unique event offered attendees the opportunity to watch one of hairdressing biggest stars and his team do hair up close and personal. I'm lucky enough to live in Chicago, one of only three cities they visited for this small-venue tour.
Even though Anthony Mascolo has been a hairdresser since he was a teenager, his passion for the art is still evident. His work ranges from wearable variations of classic cuts to wildly avant-garde styles. His been an innovator in our field for decades, even learning photography in order to re-envision the way images of hair are shot and presented to the world.
One part of the show that struck a chord with me was during the Q & A with Behind the Chair's founder, Mary Rector-Gable. Anthony said something to the effect of: even though we are artists, the goal is really to make our clients feel beautiful and confident. He seemed sincere in his passion for making others feel fantastic and, for me, this is the most fun and rewarding aspect of our profession.
