Leaning Out: Why I’m Switching to Part-Time

I need more of this. And so does he. If that means I'm leaning out, so be it. (Psst... Sheryl Sandberg:  while you are leaning in can you please fix Flickr?)

After a great deal of contemplation, I’ve decided to switch to a part time schedule. Starting in August, I’ll be working at Pin Curls Salon on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays only. I LOVE my job and I’m thrilled to continue on a part-time basis.  Big thanks to my lovely and understanding owners, Sarah McGinnis and Robin McGinnis!

So, why the change? Well, as adorable as my son is when he is asleep, most days this the only way I see him:

When Julian was a baby, my schedule as a hairstylist was fantastic. I had all morning with my son and I knew it would only be a few short hours with a sitter until my husband was home. Now that he is a big kid, we have opposite schedules. School typically starts at 8 AM and I don’t even leave work until after 8 PM. He has Saturdays off; I have Mondays. I miss him. He misses me. And let’s just say we’ve both had some behavior issues as a result.

Not to mention that I don’t do this often enough with this guy:

Enjoying a cold one with my husband, Sean.

On the other hand, my clients are so important and dear to me! Working part time is best way to add balance to my life. I really don’t anticipate much of a change for my clientele, but I do suggest pre-booking or booking in advance to ensure a time that works best for you. In an effort to ensure you can schedule an appointment with ease, I will NOT be taking new clients unless they are specifically referred to me. If you have a hair emergency on a Tuesday or Wednesday, please feel free to see any of my talented colleagues.

Rest assured, I won't be switching to a life of leisure on my days off. I'm not really "leaning out" but "leaning in a few different directions." Along with this transition, I’ll be working on a new-and-improved Parlor while J is in school. So, look for changes coming this Fall!

  1. I found your site when surfing for updo ideas (love your easy to follow instructions). I just wanted to say kudos on going part-time. I made the same decision six years ago and have never regretted it. I cannot imagine missing all the things I would have missed had I been working full-time. Children deserve to be raised by their parents. Nobody will love them better.
